The way the internet works now is you see 20 pictures of American publicist Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for every style pap picture you’ve never seen before. I find it a little grating. If you put your thumb over Carolyn’s head, you realize she’s not doing anything that interesting: black skirt, black heels, black top. It’s all hair. (Read her bio if you haven’t already.)
Minimalism is great if you’re cheerleader hot, I think for the rest of us, a little splash of color & an “interesting” accessory is going to get you much further. Anne Byrne Hoffman, former dancer for the New York City Ballet and Dustin Hoffman’s first wife, is my number one inspiration on this front:
He’s always listening staring into middle distance listening to her (hot?). On the left, they’re at Tavern on the Green—still a great “in-laws are in town” spot. First: her arms. Second, the accessories: the metal belt, the chunky turquoise (?) necklace! The color!
In the swimming pool at Cannes.
At the premiere for Lenny.
I dare you to show me a modern piece that has the same effect as her top. Opalescent!
Here’s another view.
An aspirational height difference.
This sued fringe number …
My greatest memory of Anne is as Yale’s wife in Manhattan; insane on the rewatch that she isn’t the least bit condescending to Tracy, aged 17.
