I think it’s pretty clear that Gift Guide is secretly a literary Substack, as opposed to a “shopping newsletter.” (At the end of the day, I just can’t pull off the selfies that it necessitates.) I am more excited by books than I am by any other medium. Despite all the harbinging, I feel like it’s a boon time to be a reader, especially when it comes to my obsession: Reissues of great books by women, with a special interest in the publishing world between 1984-2003. (I’m thinking of Lorin Stein’s McNally Editions and Naomi Huffman’s Hagfish especially.)
It is a logical step that I would involve people in reading books with me. I am trying to convince my friend Audrey Gelman to give me her charming new hotel for a weekend—to pop up like, a Jane Austen event for the 250th anniversary, or whatever—but until that happens, we’ll do something more lo-fi.
